Machine Learning from Learning Machines

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to express my thoughts on the current state of research, development, and regulation in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Undoubtedly, the advancements in machine learning technologies have been both groundbreaking and transformative. However, it’s evident that the existing world order is facing challenges in keeping pace with the rapid evolution of these technologies. The initiatives in place to address the lack of inclusion, fairness, and equity, while commendable, seem microscopic in comparison to the neglected majority of the global population and the pervasive impact of machine learning.
One of the fundamental challenges lies in the diversity of regulations across different countries and regions, and particular agendas that vary. The lack of inclusion of AI and machine learning development that should cater to all populations, whether they are beneficiaries or neglected, makes it difficult to establish comprehensive, globally applicable standards. As a result, the regulatory frameworks that do exist may not adequately represent the global impact of these technologies.Dear Regulators,
The exponential pace of technological change intensifies this issue. The development of universal regulatory frameworks often lags behind the emergence of new autonomous technologies, creating significant gaps in oversight. This dynamic nature of technology requires a more agile, inclusive, and responsive approach to development and suggested regulation. Moreover, regulation without understanding is ineffective; we can look back in history to see how regulations have favored detrimental practices such as apartheid, slavery, and discrimination.
Global collaboration is crucial in addressing these challenges, but achieving consensus among countries with different cultural, legal, and ethical perspectives is difficult if we continue engaging in ideological wars over principles. Despite the ongoing efforts of international organizations, research institutions, and industry groups, creating universally accepted regulations remains a challenging task. We must, however, persist in our commitment to fostering open dialogue, understanding diverse viewpoints, and finding common ground to develop effective and equitable machine learning models that benefit the global community.
Constraints faced by the world majority add another layer of complexity. Limited resources, both in terms of expertise (not talent) and infrastructure (not assets or value), will continue to hinder effective oversight and enforcement of guidelines related to the development, implementation, and application of machine learning.
While some global initiatives and industry-specific guidelines could contribute positively to the landscape, there is a pressing need for a more concerted and coordinated effort. We appear to be transferring the misdeeds of the past to the future and attributing human flaws to AI. It is essential to transcend this by fostering a proactive and empathetic approach. Let’s refrain from looking down on people, thinking we are saving them, and carrying the biases of the past!
At last, we must all agree that the scale of the challenge is existential, and the impact of machine learning on society requires ongoing and sustained efforts to ensure the beneficial development and use of these technologies. As I write, numerous wars and other challenges impede our progress. Therefore, I urge you to continue enabling transformative ideas to shape the future of AI and machine learning in a way that benefits all of humanity. Technically, transformation means a significant and fundamental change in form, nature, or structure, and is inevitable; it is precisely why we need to persevere, coexist, and thrive.
